Soma is the name of a generic prescription medication named Carisoprodol. Soma or Carisoprodol has long been prescribed to patients as a muscle relaxant and pain reliever, but it has been under review in recent decades. There is growing concern that Soma has the potential to be abused and addicted on its own. There is also a growing number of people who intentionally mix Soma and other medications, leading to emergency room visits and fatal overdoses.
Doctors recommend Soma for the prevention of muscle spasms in patients with back pain. Doctors have also traditionally prescribed Soma as a combined medication to allow them to recommend lower dosages for pain relievers such as hydrocodone, codeine, and oxycodone. These lower dosages are less habit-forming but may not be as efficient in the treatment of pain. Doctors recommend Soma with these low-dose pain relievers, as Soma has a validated ability to activate the effect of pain relievers.
